A perfect event for young children to learn about the fundamentals of
reading. Margo Klein will be presenting the workshop and demonstrating
the different parts of a book. Children will also learn how to make and
decorate their own book which they will be able to take home to share

“Identifying Collectible Books and First Editions”. Ages: General
Public.
Come and learn from Fred Holt, who has been working with antiquarian and
collectible books for the past 18 years, how to identify a collectible
book. Holt will also provide information on determining a book is in
face a first edition. Please feel free to bring in books you wish to

"Keeping Your Family Alive"
Kim Robinson tells how she came to write her families history, starting
in the 1800’s to 1997. She will also read an excerpt from her Dallas
Bestseller The Roux in the Gumbo. She will explain how researching your
family can help you in your life to break negative cycles, find the
strength that has been passed on to you through your ancestors. Blacks
were not allowed to read or write and we have a lot of catching up to
do. Most of the recognized history books were not written from our point
of view. It’s time to change that and tell how our families have
persevered and survived through slavery, reconstruction and segregation.

Poetry Workshop: “From Griots to Hip Hop…From Green Eggs and
Ham to Slam: This is Poetry”, Peni-El Raphakumwah (Age appropriate: 18
yrs+)
New to the world of poetry? Then this workshop is for you! Come and
receive a begginers introduction to poetry from Peni-El Repahakumwah
where she will review everything from language devices such as
similies and metaphors to structures such as cinquain and
diamantes. After learning the basics, Peni will also discuss
structureless poetry that is akin to the spoken word movement. You
will not leave this workshop empty handed either! Throughout Peni's
presentation participants will have the opportunity to write
original pieces in each style and leave with a skeleton of his or
her own manuscript!

Kadir Nelson will discuss his career background and share how he became a
nationally renowned artist. While detailing the illustration process
from start to finish, Nelson will discuss the importance of following

Teen Dating Violence: “Love Doesn't Hurt”, Alexus Rhone. Age
appropriate: 13 yrs+.
An overview and interactive discussion of violence in teen relationships
based on Trek and Ferris’ relationship in Backseats and Bleachers: A
High School Love Story, by Alexus Rhone. We’ll cover: How to identify
violence in teen relationships; The signs of abuse Dating violence
myths; Warning signs of perpetrators (abuser); How to address the
situation if you or your friend are in an abusive relationship. This
workshop is recommended for teens (14-18), college students, and parents
of teens.

“The Art of the People”. Ages: 14-18 yrs. At “The Art of the People”, led by Aroid Neal, students will gain a
sense of self, and become part of a rich ancestral tradition through the
art of pottery. Plates, vases and bottles are used to create beautiful
artworks adorned with cultural symbols, patterns and images that depict

Marilyn Logan, “The Money Lady”, will be presenting a workshop on her
book, “I Can’t Afford to Marry You: A guide to understanding the true
cost of love”. Come and learn about the importance of the link between
financial security and your relationships. This topic is extremely
relevant to today’s society and both teens and adults are invited to
attend!

“Life” by Leo Sullivan. Ages: 21 and above.
